MELANIE

I should be ashamed for laughing at Adam. But seeing him run away from the boat of seals was too funny. It keeps playing on repeat in my head, and I laugh every time.

There’s a surreal sort of serenity wrapping around me. Being here on the beach is more soothing than I anticipated. I almost never want to leave.

Adam watches the water like he thinks the seals are going to go full Jaws shark attack on him.

I stretch out on my beach towel and watch him. It’s the first time I’ve seen him scared . . . that I can remember in person and not from a video. It creates a new depth to what I know about my husband. He actually hid behind me, which is absolutely hilarious.

Moving quietly, I slide my hand through the sand. “Dun dun. Dun dun dun dun dun dun.” I attempt to mimic the Jaws theme song while grabbing his forearm. My musical ability is severely lacking, but Adam’s lips twitch into a brief smile.

Aha. Success.

He starts scooping sand and piling it up on my hand.

“What are you doing?”

“Sand trap.” He focuses on me. “I’m trapping you here with me forever.”

That same sadness I noted when we picked up my phone flashes over his face before he reels it in. My heart drums an unsteady beat. “If I ask you to do something, even if it sounds crazy, will you do it?”

“For you, anything.” There’s no hesitation in his voice. He’s staring into my eyes, and thank goodness I’m not standing because my knees turn to mush.

I let out a shaky breath. “I want you to quiz me about my family. Rapid fire questions. Don’t give me time to think.”

“No holds barred, ask you anything I want?” His eyebrows rise and a full smile emerges. “Oh, I do like this challenge.” He scoots closer. “I want you to lay back and close your eyes. Don’t think about anything. Let your mind and your body relax.”

I follow his instructions. With that voice, I’m tempted to fall asleep, but hearing it in my waking hours is so much better than when asleep. I want to remember. Trina had nothing but good things to say about Adam. I need those memories back.

“Are your eyes closed?” Adam’s warm voice slips over me.

I adjust my sunglasses and nod. “All set.” My other hand is still buried in the sand. The combined heat from the sand and his skin rushes through me. I steady my breathing. “Let’s go.”

“Who’s the oldest sister?”

“Pam.” I scoff. “That’s too easy.”

“Just getting warmed up, babe.”

He shifts, and I open my eyes but don’t turn my head.

Adam leans onto his elbow. Sunlight flares behind him and casts his face in shadows.

My fingers twitch on his arm as a sudden urge to kiss him roars up. Whoa. Where did that come from? I lick my dry lips. Adam’s gaze follows the movement. My stomach feels like those seals are belly flopping inside me. He wouldn’t stop me from fulfilling the urge to kiss him.
